UCF COMMUNITY NOISE LAB

TESTING, TRAINING and OTHER ACTIVITIES

This page describes some of the activities at the UCF Noise Lab. These include noise impact analyses, transportation noise research and training seminars.

FHWA Traffic Noise Model (TNM) Training

UCF has conducted training courses on the new FHWA Traffic Noise Model (TNM). This course is a collaborative effort of Dr. Wayson from UCF and Dr. Bowlby from Bowlby & Associates. Contact Roger Wayson for information on future TNM Training Courses

Some Examples of Analyses Performed by the Noise Lab

The noise lab has performed many noise impact studies and other types of testing some of which are listed below.

1995 FHWA REMEL Testing

The UCF Noise Lab participated in the development of the new FHWA Reference Energy Mean Emission Levels (REMELs) for Passenger Cars, Medium and Heavy Trucks during acceleration and cruise conditions. These REMELs were included as source levels for autos in the FHWA Traffic Noise Model (TNM).

Railroad Noise Impact Study for Brevard County Community Center

The UCF Noise Lab conducted an impact study of a nearby railroad at the proposed site of the Brevard Community Center is Sebastian, FL. The study included a HUD analysis and the RWNM model was used to predict insertion loss of different barrier designs for the site.

Traffic Noise Impact Study for Buckeye Parkway in Toledo, Ohio

The Noise Lab conducted a noise impact study on apartments bordering the new Buckeye Parkway in Toledo, Ohio. The Parkway is a multiple lane highway that enters downtown Toledo. Parkway construction is shown below.

The Noise Lab has had the opportunity to host several international seminars with participants from around the world. Some of these seminars include the following.

ISO Transportation Noise Standards Meetings

Participants from the U.S., Europe, Japan and South Africa have convened at UCF several times to discuss international standards concerning noise levels related to transportation. Some of the topics included the effect of different road surfaces on noise levels generated by automobiles.
